Principal Product Development Engineer, R&D


Career Profile
Emcore develops and manufactures the most efficient solar cells in the world. These multi-junction solar cells provide power for most of the satellites and extra-planetary spacecraft in use in space today, and are also poised to provide a cost-effective source of clean, renewable energy here on Earth. Emcore is seeking an exceptional Principal Product Development Engineer to support the development of space solar cell products. This person will contribute to a successful space solar cell product line in a unique and exciting market by driving improvements in performance, cost, reliability, and manufacturing capability for these solar.

Performance Profile
° Contribute technical innovation to improve product value and increase market share, including new device designs and manufacturing methods.
° Manage space solar cell development and procurement programs both technically and administratively.
° Define the technical objectives, scope of work, budget, milestones, needed resources, and schedule of large and small projects.
° Assume ownership and accountability for successful completion of programs.
° Report results both internally and externally with presentations and formal reports.
° Interface with customers and translate customer requirements into profitable products that meet customer needs.
° Act as liaison between customer base, sales team, R&D teams that develop new technology, and manufacturing organization that produces product.
° Develop strong working relationships across the organization and across the customer base.
Manage the configuration of new solar cell products
° Develop a detailed understanding of the design, construction, manufacturing methods and operating principles of series interconnected multi-junction solar cells
° Develop a detailed understanding of the customer base and design requirements for space solar cells.

Qualifications and Credentials
° This position requires a well-rounded set of skills including technical ability, product development skills, familiarity with semiconductor device manufacturing methods, strong communication skills, and program management skills.
° The ideal candidate has an MS/PhD degree in electrical engineering, materials science or physics, experience in solar cell product development, and program management experience in a production oriented manufacturing facility.
° U.S. citizenship mandatory.

Principal Process Development Engineer, R&D

Emcore is seeking an exceptional engineer interested in applying their talent and motivation to solving problems in the ever-important renewable energy industry. This engineer will work in an R&D environment to develop advanced process capabilities to manufacture and improve cutting-edge solar cell products.

Performance Profile
° Lead semiconductor fabrication process development projects to advance new products from concept phase through manufacturing phase.
° Develop a detailed understanding of the design, construction, manufacturing methods and operating principles of series interconnected multi-junction solar cells
° Contribute technical innovation to improve product value and increase market share, including new device designs and manufacturing methods.
° Assume ownership and accountability for successful completion of programs.
° Define the technical objectives, scope of work, budget, milestones, needed resources, and schedule of large and small projects.
° Develop sufficient expertise with available modeling, growth, fabrication, test, and design tools to recommend better methods, improved designs and upgrade opportunities.
° Use analysis tools such as Excel, JMP and presentation tools such as Word and Powerpoint to develop thoughtful and correct analyses and conclusions of projects, and present those conclusions to others in a convincing and confident manner.
° Report results both internally and externally with presentations and formal reports.
° Develop strong working relationships across the organization.
° Develop a detailed understanding of the customer base and design requirements for space and terrestrial solar cells.

Qualifications and Credentials
° This position requires a well-rounded set of skills including technical ability, fabrication process development skills, familiarity with semiconductor device manufacturing methods, and strong communication skills.
° The ideal candidate has an MS/PhD degree in electrical engineering, materials science or physics, experience in solar cell product development, and strong background in common III-V (Arsenide & Phosphide) semiconductor fabrication techniques.

Principal Test Engineer, R&D


Career Profile

These multi-junction solar cells provide power for most of the satellites and extra-planetary spacecraft in use in space today, and are also poised to provide a cost-effective source of clean, renewable energy here on Earth. Emcore is seeking an exceptional engineer interested in applying their talent and motivation to solving problems in the ever-important renewable energy industry. This engineer will work in an R&D environment to develop advanced design capabilities and test equipment and will use that equipment to develop, and manufacture, and improve cutting-edge solar cell products.

Performance Profile
° Develop a detailed understanding of the design, construction, manufacturing methods and operating principles of series interconnected multi-junction solar cells.
° Develop a detailed understanding of how external variables such as temperature, illumination intensity, illumination uniformity, and spectral characteristics influence the operation and performance of multi-junction solar cells.
° Develop a detailed understanding of semiconductor bandgaps, their influence on light absorption, light emission, photogenerated current production, and voltage production in solar cells.
° Develop both a theoretical and practical working knowledge of the entire suite of test equipment used to characterize and rate the performance of multi-junction solar cells, including Quantum Efficiency, Pulsed and Continuous Illuminated Current-Voltage, Dark Current-Voltage, Transfer Length Measurement, Electro Luminescence, Reflectance.
° Identify the important parameters that can be extracted from an IV curve such as short circuit current, open circuit voltage, fill factor, shunt resistance, series resistance, ideality factor, and the phenomena that are responsible for variability in the above parameters.
° Combine the understanding described above to allow accurate definition of the problem or need, identification of the correct measurement method to address the need, efficient and correct use of the measurement tool, and meaningful and high-value analysis of the data.
° Use analysis tools such as Excel, JMP and presentation tools such as Word and Powerpoint to develop thoughtful and correct analyses and conclusions, and present those conclusions to others in a convincing and confident manner.
° Develop a detailed understanding of the construction and operation of modeling and design tools used to predict/understand results and improve the performance of these solar cells
° Develop sufficient expertise with available test, modeling and design tools to recommend better methods, improved designs and upgrade opportunities.
° Define the goals, scope of work, budget, needed resources, schedule of large and small projects and manage those projects effectively to completion.
° Effectively train technicians on the proper use of equipment, and support their work with proper guidance, expertise and help.
° Develop collaborative working relationships with technicians and engineers. Work with technicians and engineers to coordinate and prioritize the workload

Qualifications and Credentials
° An advanced degree in electrical engineering or physics, or equivalent training, is required.
° 3+ years related experience are advantageous.
° Training in semiconductor device theory is advantageous.
° US citizenship mandatory.
