- CHTM made a splash in the Albuquerque business news for its research towards creating the next generation of infrared detectors. The work has attracted the notice of Raytheon Vision systems, as well as Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories. Click the Albuquerque Journal article for more info.
- Congratulations to Dr. Luke Lester, who has been named a Fellow of both IEEE (the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and SPIE, the Society for Optics and Photonics. Dr. Lester was recognized by both organizations for his work in quantum dot lasers. See the UNM news release here.
- Patent 8,312,967 (Nov 20, 2012) has been issued for Cubic Phase, Nitrogen-Based Compound Semiconductor Films Epitaxially Grown on a Grooved Si<001> Substrate.
- Congratulations to Dr. Majeed Hayat, Associate Director of CHTM, who has been elected a Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA). OSA recognized Dr. Hayat "for pioneering the dead-space formulation of impact ionization and noise in avalanche photodiodes and developing non-uniformity correction algorithms for infrared sensors." The OSA Fellow is awarded to OSA Members who have served with distinction in the advancement of optics. This honor is reserved to no more than 10% of the total membership.
- Professor Marek Osinski has been appointed Associate Editor of IEEE Photonics Journal, a new online-only journal that offers an open-access option and fast processing times. The Journal is published by the IEEE Photonics Society, formerly known as the Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (LEOS). CHTM congratulates Professor Osinski for this achievement, which demonstrates his visibility and solid reputation in the photonics community worldwide.
- CHTM recently co-sponsored the first annual Filament Science Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (FS MURI), funded by the US Army Research Office. UNM has pioneered this area of physics, and the workshop brought together a world-class team of participants equipped with the tools and expertise to elevate filamentation to a precision engineering discipline.
- CHTM Professor recognized for innovative cancer research: Prof. Sanjay Krishna and his wife Sanchita were recognized for their innovative research in possible early detection of skin cancer using non-invasive infrared imaging instead of the current method of biopsy. The couple were cited in an Albuquerque Journal article about research at UNM.
- UNM Collaborates on NSF Nanoscale Manufacturing Research Center: UNM will participate on a National Science Foundation grant to develop nanoscale manufacturing systems for mobile computing. CHTM director Distinguished Professor Steven R. J. Brueck will lead the UNM activities under the $18.5 million multi-year grant, and a testbed for nanomanufacturing metrology will be built at CHTM. - Congratulations to professor Luke Lester for being named the SPIE 2012 Harold E. Edgerton Award winner in recognition of his pioneering contributions to the development, characterization, and integration of quantum dot mode-locked lasers as high-speed optical sources.

- Congratulations to CHTM student Nathan Withers for being presented the 2012 Ocean Optics Young Investigator Award for his paper entitled "Effects of LaF3:Ce nanoparticles capped with polyethylene glycol on human astrocytoma cells in vitro" at the Colloidal Nanocrystals for Biomedical Applications VII conference.
- Former CHTM student Andreas Velten, currently a researcher at the MIT Media Lab, is one of the co-authors of the paper "Picosecond Camera for Time-of-Flight Imaging," otherwise referred to as the "Trillion Frames per Second Camera," as in this ABC News video. - The US Patent office has issued over 100 patents to CHTM Researchers since the Center was founded in the early 1980s, 45 of which have been licensed by companies wishing to use the technology. - Congratulations to graduate student Nutan Gautam for being awarded the 2011 John Kiel Scholarship by SPIE, the International Society for Optics and Photonics. - Congratulations to graduate student Ajit Barve for three prestigious awards. For 2011, Ajit has received an ECE Outstanding Graduate Student award from the UNM School of Engineering, an SPIE scholarship for Academic Excellence, and an award from Sigma Xi for Outstanding Graduate Researcher.

- CHTM Director and UNM Distinguished Professor Steven Brueck chaired the National Academies committee that just released a report about emerging visible and infrared technologies with the potential for military utility. - Researchers at CHTM in collaboration with a researcher at the University of Arizona have demonstrated the first multi-watt quantum dot VECSEL (vertical external-cavity surface-emitting laser). - Ganesh Balakrishnan is now an Assistant Professor in UNM's School of Engineer, formerly the Technical Director at the Integrated NanoMaterials Core Facility at California NanoSystems Institute, UCLA. His post-doctoral research was performed at UNM's Center for High Technology Materials, with research interests including compound semiconductor based optoelectronics and novel epitaxial processes.
- Assistant Prof Mani Hossein-Zadeh has joined UNM's School of Engineering. His main research area is photonics and is interested in RF/microwave- photonics devices and systems, optomechanical oscillators, ultra high-Q optical microresonators and bio/chemical photonic sensors. He was a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Applied Physics, California Institute of Technology with a PhD from the University of Southern California.
